Preparing for a Doctor’s Visit: Nurse Tracie’s Checklist for a Better Appointment
Tracie Slaoui • January 21, 2026
A smoother appointment starts before you walk through the door.
A doctor’s appointment works best when everyone shows up prepared. As a nurse, I’ve seen how a little planning can completely change the outcome of a visit, not just for the provider, but for you.
Here’s how to prepare so your appointment is focused, productive, and worth your time.
1. Write Down Your Concerns
Before your visit, take a moment to list your top concerns. Prioritize what matters most to you. When you’re clear, your doctor can be too.
2. Bring a Current Medication List
Include prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, supplements, and vitamins. This helps prevent interactions and saves valuable appointment time.
3. Be Specific About Symptoms
Instead of saying “I don’t feel right,” try:
When the symptom started
How often it happens
What makes it better or worse
Specific details help guide better decisions.
4. Think About Changes in Your Life or Lifestyle
New foods, supplements, exercise routines, stress levels, sleep changes, or recent travel can all matter. Even small changes can provide important clues for your doctor.
5. Ask the Questions You’re Allowed to Ask
You deserve to understand your care. Ask about next steps, warning signs, and follow-up plans. Good care is a partnership.
